Sonmarg (The Meadows of Gold)
As you journey from Srinagar to Leh, Sonmarg marks the last stop in the Kashmir region before entering Ladakh. Situated at an altitude of 2,743 meters above sea level, Sonmarg lives up to its name, meaning “Meadow of Gold.” Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking snow-capped mountains forming the town’s picturesque backdrop. Surrounded by lush alpine forests, Sonmarg is home to some of the most beautiful floral landscapes in Jammu & Kashmir.
During winter, a thick blanket of snow transforms the town into a serene wonderland, offering a completely different charm. Sonmarg is well known for its numerous excursions, including scenic walks and trekking routes leading to stunning locations. The most famous trek is to the revered Amarnath Caves. Nearby, Baltal serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra.

A short 4 km trek from Sonmarg leads to the breathtaking Thajiwas Glacier, a major summer attraction. The trail passes through picturesque plateaus, snowfields, and dense pine forests, creating a stunning landscape. Visitors can also take a three-mile horseback ride to the glacier.
Located at the foot of the Zoji La Pass, Baltal is the final stop in Kashmir before entering Ladakh. The Amarnath Glacier’s river merges with the Indus near Baltal, making it an essential site for pilgrims. During the Amarnath Yatra, temporary camps are set up here. While the trek to the Amarnath Cave can be done in a day, checking weather conditions beforehand is advisable, as the route can be challenging due to snow and ice. A jeep road now extends most of the way to the cave.
Zojila Pass, also known as the gateway to Ladakh, offers stunning panoramic views, including the sight of Gangabal Lake 2,000 feet below and the towering 16,872-foot Haramukh peak. The alpine trek via Nichinai to Gangabal Lake and down the Wangat Valley takes approximately seven days. This pass is considered one of the most challenging in the region.
Just 6 km from Sonmarg lies Nilagrad, a unique spot where a small stream meets the Mountain River Sindh. The river’s water has a reddish hue, and locals believe it holds medicinal properties capable of curing ailments. Every Sunday, people visit to bathe in its waters.
Situated near Sonmarg at an altitude of 3,801 meters, Krishnasar Lake is renowned for its pristine beauty and trout fishing. Surrounded by peaceful landscapes, it is an ideal spot for relaxation. The lake is accessible via the Nichinai Pass (4,084 meters), and nearby lies Bisansar Lake, equally famous for its scenic charm. The best time to visit is from April to June.
Known as the “Lake of Vishnu,” Vishansar Lake holds great religious significance for Kashmiri Pandits. Enveloped by lush meadows and majestic mountains, the lake is home to diverse fish species, including the famous brown trout. In winter, the lake freezes completely, while in summer, it transforms into a paradise with grazing sheep and crystal-clear waters.
Located at the foothills of Harmukh Peak, Gangabal Lake sits at an altitude of 3,570 meters. This mesmerizing lake is a haven for fishing enthusiasts, with rainbow trout being the highlight. The trek to Gangabal is an adventure in itself, taking you through awe-inspiring landscapes. The best trekking months are from July to October, while fishing is ideal from March to October.
