Gulmarg, nestled in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, is a breathtaking destination near the India-Pakistan border. Its unique geography makes it an ideal spot for skiing in the Himalayas. Located 52 km from Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, Gulmarg sits at an elevation of 2,650 meters, receiving some of the heaviest snowfall in the region.

Known as the “Meadow of Flowers,” Gulmarg is also home to the world’s highest golf course. This charming village lies within the Pir Panjal range, the westernmost part of the six mountain ranges that form the Himalayas. Originally a summer retreat for Mughal rulers and later a favored getaway for the British elite, Gulmarg was established as a ski resort in 1927 by two British Army officers.

In 2005, Phase II of the Gulmarg Gondola was introduced, extending up to just below the summit of Mt. Apharwat (4,124 meters). This expansion opened up thrilling ski runs and panoramic views of the Kashmir Valley. The gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, ascends to approximately 13,000 feet, offering an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Gulmarg’s history dates back to the 2nd century AD when shepherds referred to it as “Gauri Marg” during their summer stays in its lush meadows. In the 16th century, Sultan Yusuf Shah of the Chak Dynasty built a summer palace here, recognizing its natural beauty. The British later transformed it into a resort in the 19th century.

Beyond its scenic and sporting appeal, Gulmarg has long been a favored location for Bollywood filmmakers, with its mesmerizing landscapes serving as the backdrop for numerous iconic movies.

During winter, Gulmarg transforms into a snow-covered paradise, drawing skiers, snowboarders, and winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. The annual Gulmarg Snow Festival celebrates the season with cultural events and thrilling snow sports competitions.

With its stunning beauty, rich history, and adventurous spirit, Gulmarg continues to captivate travelers and thrill-seekers alike, making it a must-visit destination in every season.
